Vito Mannone had been praised by Arsene Wenger. He had tipped the Italian goalkeeper to succeed at the club after he showed us what he was capable of doing by keeping two clean sheets in two consecutive away fixtures.
Mannone would be in goal against Montpellier as Szczesny had been ruled out due to an ankle injury.
Speaking on Mannone, he said,
“Vito, as I told you last week, is very close,” the Frenchman told Arsenal Player. “He gets another opportunity now. He has belief and he has the mental strength to deal with that.”
He also spoke about James Shea's inclusion in the Champions League squad.
“He was on the list as goalkeeper No 5 at the beginning of the season and now he is No 2,” said Wenger. “That shows you how quickly football can change. "Martinez is [ineligible] from the [B] list and Wojciech [Szczesny] and Fabianski are injured. So Mannone will play on Tuesday night.”
